As surely as the Lord lives….

In my reading of the Old Testament I am now in 1 Kings in the story of Elijah.

I am beyond excited to see what God will show me through this amazing story!

However, that is not why I am posting. I have noticed a phrase that everyone in these stories use whenever they speak.

Here is an example in 1 Kings 17:12

“As surely as the Lord your God lives,”

In the stories the people in them use this phrase it seems to add more validity to what they are about to say. You know like, “I promise on my mothers life that I am telling the truth,” but its so much more I believe.

The more I think about it, the more I think it was also an accountability measure for them. To cause them to always follow the Lord even in the way they spoke. Because if you say as surely as the Lord lives and then follow that up with a lie you are committing not one but two violations of the ten comandments, because you just lied and took the Lord’s name in vain.

But I still think its more.

Do you actively engage the thought that the Lord lives?

That He is a Living God?

They did. everyday. They embrace the life that the Lord has and they witnessed to others that the Lord does in fact live! I wonder what our lives would look like if we really engaged and reminded ourselves that the Lord is alive! All around us?

I think its worth thinking about.
